Watch The MIRV Payload Counts Explode

The worse possible development would be an intercept system that actually works some of the time.

I honestly believe the United States has nobody left in the think tanks to tell them about the consequences of getting these working again. The U.S. was pursuing ABMs initially in the 60's and into the 70's with serious early warning line defense. I don't think they know about the dominos that start to tumble when you plot your strategy according to this technology.

Herman Kahn in ON THERMONUCLEAR WAR described how such systems would immediately compel the enemy to begin loading up more and more warheads for multiple deployment in every device. So you can hit one of them? Great, now can you hit thirty? Can you hit the ICBM before it reaches the altitude over the target and deploys those multiple payloads? You only have to miss one to lose a city.

Tex when discussing Thermonuclear wars with normal people the other day it occurred to me that I had no idea what would trigger it. The people around me (educated, PhD types) were arguing that no HQ would ever make the decision of firing the missiles because 'who wants to live in a worldwide nuclear wasteland with barely any survivors afterward'?
I argued that it depended on the ideology followed by the people in charge and that the nazis would probably have had the guts to do it but quite frankly aside from them I don't see the Russians, Chinese or Americans power brokers choosing that option unless their own lives were directly threatened.

So why would any group of people in power, be they Russians or Americans, even consider thermonuclear war? What could threaten them more than a global cataclysm and being constrained in a bunker for the rest of their lives if they survive?

Except being "confined to their bunkers for the rest of their lives" is just part of their propaganda. That was never anything more than science fiction for the masses. They plan to survive, emerge and rule over a vastly easier population size to manage. They are far better prepared than 99% of the people they govern to do 6 months or a year underground and operate afterwards with far better resources to draw upon.

It's never the end of the world. It is probably just the end of you. All that "nuclear war blah blah contaminated planet forever" drivel is just for the rubes.

Where you believe anything you have been told you are in error.

How won't their quality of life not be considerably reduced? These people thrive when being the center of attention in massive metropolises and international high powered evenings. They love their 6 stars hotels, 3 stars restaurants, media attention, Hollywood movies, clubs, high rise luxury pads, their corporate jobs and the suit life.

Why would they remotely want to change their lifestyle to govern over whatever backwater shithole hasn't been radiated and ruined while having to reinstate the rule of law through tedious military oppression?

@lyrk

If you are banking the rest of your life on the idea that the people who run the world are not willing to be inconvenienced in order to be rid of you, good luck.

Seen some of the interiors of these shelters? You call that inconvenience?

Hiroshima looks like a modern, thriving city right now.

I think it's silly to say you can't hit ICBM's. We have done so. The argument that they'll just build more is not really an answer either. Why? The distance to send an ICBM is much longer than the distance for an interceptor. So if your interceptors can be much cheaper. All ICBM's, no matter what, are going to be glowing hot from atmosphere friction. So interceptors only need to track incoming super hot noisy fast objects. The electronics for that I think should be easier than a super accurate ICBM which is difficult. A fancy Passive Infrared array can see exactly where these are. You know they build these for motion detectors for a song now. If there are decoys they will have to be the same weight or they will slow down and be easily apparent so decoys don't save you any money.

A wide spread radar network can be built by just monitoring all the commercial radio stations and their returns. That's the way the Chinese want to defeat stealth tech. I don't see why we can't do the same for ICBM's. The problem from the attackers side is they must knock us OUT and I don't see that happening. It's too damn risky.

It's immoral to not at least try to shoot down ICBM's. I also believe it's immoral to allow civil defense only for the chosen few.
