The Utterly Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse

There is already too much unconsciousness in the world. Into such a sleep what dreams may come? What horrors rush in to fill the shadows we are seeing that used to be the in-dwelling places of the soul? Nature abhors a vacuum and most of the population is nearly there now.

As sure as death and taxes, one way or another we will have the zombie apocalypse. The flavour like Baskin Robbins is no matter. We may have it from hunger. We may have it from disease. Or we might just have it because once you strip enough humanity away from humans they aren't human any longer. I agree with the author. It is written in the stars that this will happen. Where will you be when it happens? On the road like the sheriff and his merry band living from hand to mouth? Or 12 feet underground playing parcheesi in a properly constructed and livable, hospitable long term vault? A day is coming when the question will no longer be theoretical.

Tex, how long do you intend to stay down in your vault, and what do you expect to find when you emerge?

I don't see how I'm going to make a vault... so I guess I can learn guerrilla tactics. Joking aside, I'm curious how the rulers will reorganize things on Earth if nearly everybody is dead or too stupid to be helpful.

Something you might find interesting, Tex.

A four repeat allele of the DRD4 gene has been shown to correlate with conservatism.

This is why they are working hard on the robots now. They are hoping they can synchronize their wide scale adoption and phase the peasants out at the same time. Services no longer necessary.

My dream is to be fully stocked for a 40 year stay if necessary and to be so flush with food it permits plenty of security while agriculture is developed and if it should fail for any reason. The hydroponics garden is a great thing to have but even better is a backup plan if even that should fail.

@ghost. Don't give up if you don't have a vault. Look at this page on radiation effects.

http://glasstone.blogspot.com/

At Hiroshima the Bank of Japan building was 380 Meters from ground zero. The second floor caught on fire and was put out by the occupants. The building remained standing and most people in the building survived. So if you have three feet of some kind of cover. newspapers, dirt, wood, or whatever it will lower the radiation enough. After 6 weeks or so the level will be down a LOT. Of course Cobalt radiation bombs would take a very long time. The problem with cobalt bombs is it would be impossible to hit every area at once and completely carpet a whole country, from Wikipedia,"...Another important point in considering the effects of cobalt bombs is that deposition of fallout is not even throughout the path downwind from a detonation, so that there are going to be areas relatively unaffected by fallout and places where there is unusually intense fallout, so that the Earth would not be universally rendered lifeless by a cobalt bomb...". This means the person who fired them would be less likely to do so seeing as how he could then expect the same.

I think I forgot the radiation effects link.

The lower levels of a parking garage, once the entrance is blocked, have greater protection factors in many cases than custom built government redoubts. If the air has to pass around 3 levels to get to you then normally the ash particles that carry fallout will never make it that far. If you could even block up one of the ramps with a regular cloth sheet or similar you could filter them all out and not even need special air processing. The problem would be that many parking garages have chimneys that go to the roof that bring the air down to you.

Parking garage is good idea. Never thought of that. I used nukemap,

http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/

and did a bunch of test at the nearest city to my property and in most cases I was in good shape. Nukes are extremely powerful for the UNPREPARED and yes if you're in the strike zone you're probably toast but like you said if you have any kind of civil defense you can be in good shape. Of course the idiots running my gov. don't care at all about the people.

That being said I'm not in good enough shape or prepared enough if there's a full on nuke war. I'd last a lot longer than you're average Joe but I wouldn't survive long from the gangs that would pop up. And I'm not as ruthless as that sort so I probably couldn't do what they did to survive. (Read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy).
