Reporting Solution Found For Vault-OS

The HTML-to-PDF solution produces the most brilliant looking reports imaginable. Custom styles, formatting and layout are all faithful to the original. Sample output style above as example. It can be output with plain black and white or high contrast applied in the stylesheet.

I tried sending some of my inventory grids from the old VOS I had saved as HTML files except paginated lists to the PDF converter and they came out in the browser window correctly paginated for printing. I had always theorised this was possible and it is a fantastic way to generate a myriad of reports for the inventory manager, the shopping list, duty roster, radio contacts, inspection lists ... all as PDFs that can be viewed in the browser or sent to a printer. My 10 year old Compaq T5710 thin client that I purchased for $2 on EBay displays all of VOS correctly, including JQuery controls, Raphael vectors and has a built-in PDF viewer that comes installed. If the VOS server is running somewhere it is just plug-n-play and this box becomes a distributed terminal to control or monitor anything else in the shelter. My whole system is based on a few dollars for the lot if you can't find half of it thrown out somewhere.

There's a drawback and it is that you need a 20 megabyte open source PDF converter and accompanying 22 MB .DLL in the "bin" directory for all this to come off correctly. The Lua script that generates the reports as HTML calls the converter when it is done. It is easy to disable this feature and instead pop up the HTML in a new browser window which the user can then arrange to send to a freeware PDF printer or even send it directly to the printer if he thinks it will turn out looking okay.

The thing that bugs me about this approach is that it breaks my all-in-one .EXE superserver architecture by requiring a platform specific utility in the "bin" directory as well. It also adds a physical cache that needs automated management. (To delete old files on a regular basis and keep it from growing too big) This isn't too hard to implement, however. Most web servers do this. This open source converter comes with executable binaries compiled for almost all major OSes as well as all source code. It is totally portable.

Of course, I could just add a configuration flag that turns this process off and launches the HTML report in a browser window and leave it to the user to output the document however their local setup permits.

The reason I am telling Vault-Co readers all these details is that I am hoping somebody out there knows an even better way. For example ...

1. A much smaller HTML-to-PDF converter that either comes as a library or with source under a megabyte. Or a portable renderer that is an executable that takes up less space than 40+ MB.

2. Another way altogether to approach the problem ... like a report formatting tool that would plug into my former solution, LibHaru, with commands to draw tables, grids and layouts and then dump it into a PDF.

3. Another alternative like a way to build rich text files from a Lua script with tables or a Lua plug-in with some C code to render to some other document type that would be smaller and more efficient than what I am using, mostly important to compile it right in with what I have and return to my all-in-one total solution server that can do everything.

I may be making a fool out of myself but I just wonder if I throw a net out there somebody might have a better paradigm. Forty megabytes in the 'bin' directory is a little heavyweight compared with all the other code I have now.

ICBMs Are So Last Tuesday

The real power in the Third World War will come from hypersonic nuclear glider drones.

A cloud of red mercury nuclear cluster bomblets and then spray plutonium out the back for a couple of years until it finally crashes.

A proper vault is required for this war.

America continues to prepare for nuclear war in the 1960's. My former nation doesn't stand a ghost of a chance.

Zika Is Not Made By Nature

Outbreak occurred precisely where genetically engineered mosquitoes were released.

Brilliant stuff by the NWO. It doesn't kill you. That might cause a panic. It effectively kills your kids. Extraordinary and subtle. These guys know how to fly under radar without being seen until it is right on top of you.

Fantastically stealthy ... most don't know they have it. Most won't until they have children. A pandemic that is so furtive it does not broadcast it's presence until everybody has got it.

If the next generation is all microcephalics, there won't be a generation after that. Very clever stuff.

The plague that creeps in and produces nasties like continuous fever and Guillain-Barre. Forever.

Kwanstainia, Land Of A Thousand ButtHurts

To know them is to despise them. If a Kwanstainian tells you it is raining outside, don't bother with your umbrella going to work today. Everything they say is the opposite of the truth. Good is evil. Bitter is sweet. Up is down. Truth is lies.

Give them kids more dope because it makes them better. Permanently. Now they are good yanks. Wait, what is the reason we giving them this crap again? I forgot.

I am sure if all that was true they would tell us about it. Needs more green screen. It's not trustworthy until it is photoshopped and contrast reversed. Everything.

LibHaru is a Wash

When push came to shove, embedded libharu with lua binding was a wash. I could not generate decent reports for it despite hours of work writing utility routines in Lua for it. I tried everything until I realised the library is just nothing but a collection of crude primitives that you can create a .PDF file with as a server stream. An impressive toy but under real use at work it fell apart.

My original idea for reporting was printing a report as a block formatted HTML paginated browser view and then figuring out how to send this to the printer or PDF. This means on thin clients it has to have a printer server connected or at least some kind of PDF server. There is a really good open source PDF server I switched to but it complicates reporting in Vault-OS which ideally was intended to be an all-in-one. The PDF has to run as a utility which the Lua executes with the HTML as an argument and then dumps it into a cache. This is my solution at work but I think I am going to hatch something else for Vault-OS. I may keep looking for a compact embeddable library that can stream to a web page but mainly converts HTML on the fly to .PDF where possible.

Any ideas from anyone else, seriously, much appreciated. Reporting in Vault-OS is a biggie. You have to be able to print out a shopping list to go the supermarket and top up your wishlist and expired or rotated list. It is really important functionality in a survivalist inventory manager. The barcoding solution I solved so elegantly it is beyond belief, also as an HTML trick to print barcode 39 straight from the browser. If anybody knows an embeddable solution in ANSI C I could compile directly into my code like LibHaru that outputs to .EPS, .PDF or LaTex and permits complex chart and table functionality with ease I would be really interested. Anything that once it is output can be displayed to the browser window directly or else sent to the printer. I know it sounds like a big ask and it is complicated but I have already turned so many huge problems into simple solutions with Vault-OS I know there is something out there that would work for this. The ideal solution would be to create a report as HTML and send it to .PDF like I am doing at present except this code would be compiled right into it. Incidentally I tried removing Libharu and the current build instantly shrunk from 2.1 megs to 1.28 megs, again small enough to fit on a floppy.

My solution for work requires a binary command utility to be present in the bin directory under the server, a good answer for my current requirements but a little too specific for Vault-OS. Any help from anyone will be much appreciated. Remember, ANSI C cross platform code is best. (I know this sounds ridiculously difficult to satisfy but somebody out there may know of another way of thinking about the problem of printing formatted reports altogether.)

Creepy New Depopulation Supervirus Released

I'm not sure if Kwanstainian heads became tiny that anyone would really notice.

Cooling temperatures will help keep it closer to the equator but you never know. This is very bad stuff. 3000+ microcephalics born in a year instead of 160 is apocalyptic stuff.

Georgia Guidestones program is definitely beginning. Softening them up for the nukes is a big part of the prep stages. If they are too dumb to even know what is happening most of them won't even have the foggiest idea of how to survive the recovery phase, especially fallout and famine. Seems like each week people are getting slower here in Australia. Every single week. No way am I getting smarter every week so I am certain it is them in most cases.

Thermostat Off

... just in time, too. Man I been burning up on this planet since I don't know when. There's nothing like an invigorating blast of cool air.

I feel a classic Neanderthal song coming on. Just imagine that I have used CGI to place this tune in a winter wonderland with 7 foot deep permafrost and a friendly sabre tooth tiger smiling from atop a glacier ... of course I would be singing this with a gigantic pile of furs on and a throwing disc ...

Maybe this one is way more appropriate ... "End of the interglacial? Beginning of an Ice Age? Oh, Sapiens, please don't throw me into dat permafrost! Iz gonna be a goner!"

Kwanstainian Thugs Bragging About Stealing Land

... from war veterans at a fraction of it's worth using legal manoeuvres and sophistry backed by the power of the State.

I bet their parents are really proud of them, stealing land from their fellow citizens and "little guys" who were WW2 veterans.

This is the real face of abomination that hides behind the State. It is these people who are the "little people," who like functionaries in all totalitarian societies turn into miserable tyrants, each of them a master of a little crime syndicate that seeks to prey on it's own people.

Planet With A Dead Sun

Oh no! Not the end of the Holocene! Neanderthal is affeert.

HAHAHAHAH ROFL Tee-shirt weather for the Enkidu. It's not the heat, it's the humidity. I'm afraid you may have been the victim of a cruel tourism hoax where the Northern Hemisphere was portrayed as "habitable" and "reasonably temperate." If they told you that then they lied. It's Neanderthal world above the equator and it always will be. You have been warned.

Brilliant Modern Era Info On Civil Defense!

* Thanks to "Sam" For This Link

Incredibly, it has taken 50 years for people in the United States to conclude what the Rand Corporation figured out shortly after World War II and the first detonation at Hiroshima.

It is not ground bursts that are unreliable. Ground bursts are more effective for total casualties than air bursts. You heard that right.

All my life I have heard that modern nuclear weapons are about airbursts and that the ground burst is science fiction. They're not theoretical if you intend your weapon to be efficient.

Total casualties in the ground burst are the people inside the crater plus the exponential damage done by the extremely dirty fallout ash kicked up at the point of detonation. Total body count is formidable for people downwind without shelter.

What's the real reason you have not heard about this your whole life except on Vault-Co?

If people realised nuclear war was about ground bursts they would quickly realise that foregoing civil defense preparations is nothing short of deliberate suicide. Civil defense could cut casualties 90% from ground bursts if people have shelters. With a proper civil defense program, the majority of people outside the crater survive and the majority of all secondary casualties are in people walking around in the city or in their cars when that ground burst goes off a few blocks away. In a nation with a good civil defense program, you would find that almost everybody survived in the suburbs and rural areas beyond that. If this were a country like Switzerland then once you find out how limited airburst damage really is and fallout ceases to be a real problem and you know what? The enemy starts to think to himself that nuclear war just does not satisfy risks-versus-costs ratios.

There is nothing you can do to encourage nuclear war more than to go without civil defense for your population. It is a hopelessly doomed strategic position in nuclear brinksmanship. Doomed. The think tanks figured it out a half century ago but modern people can't remember anything that happened last week. Not a good spot to be in for Western civilisation, especially now.

Fire Ant Hellstorm 1984

One night in the military my last year, I was creeping around my old unit in the woods. I was playing OPFOR (Opposing Forces) amongst my other makework duties so sometimes when they went out onto the artillery range for the night I would sneak up on their watch or get within 5 inches of their commanding officer to make fools out of them.

I could actually hear two NCOs talking about me standing in the line beside the chow truck while they were waiting for dinner to be served. "Where is that asshole PFC Blakemore tonight? Is he playing the communist again this evening? I swear to God I will beat his ass into puree with the butt of my M-16 if I catch him trying to sneak up on me again."

I had to lay flat on the ground and try to keep from giving myself away by laughing. I was in some really thick weeds and I had the poncho liner flipped out to the camouflage side laying on top of me. I was slowly dragging myself across the ground. Every previous time I tried this it had worked like a charm. Low light at dusk, a little camo and a lot of patience. It made the sentries look terrible if you even got as far as I was at that point. Nobody had challenged me yet or even seen me.

The other NCO responded to this guy, "Has the Colonel adopted this kid yet? I don't understand what is happening any more in this man's army. Is Blakemore now in his own special unit? He seems to running his own army now. I saw him the other morning and told him he better put some polish down on those boots, he was telling me Russians don't shine their boots, Sarge. I'm sorry, he says, I got to stay in character I am serious about this sh*t." The other NCO shook his head like this was the most depressing thing he had ever heard. "That troop might as well join Spetznatz. He's lost to us. He's gone commie. They will understand if we have to shoot his ass. He defected."

So I was already celebrating my victory. I had patiently come across the shallows of the nearby river, crept up to the shore behind some P2 who almost looked like he was sleeping with his helmet pulled down over his eyes. Then I had sprawled out in the weeds on the bank and begun crawling my way towards the middle of camp a meter a minute or so. If I was really patient I was planning to make it to the officer's tent again. It's really rewarding to stick your head through the flap while they are eating dinner and announce "PFC Blakemore, sir. Nobody challenged me for the password, I could have just as easily dropped a grenade in here just now."

Ever since this night, whenever I see a movie about commandos sneaking up on a camp at night I always think about all the things that could possibly go wrong that you never see in Hollywood films. A poisonous snake in the bushes. Centipedes a foot long than can bite a man and send him into convulsions. These movie commandos are always in the thickest part of some jungle wilderness that absolutely must be bloated with deadly spiders, snakes and chiggers and many of them never even identified by entomologists. Unbelievable hazards in all that thick undergrowth you see them skulking in.

This was Fort Riley, Kansas and I did not have direct experience with Fire Ants. It had not occurred to me that they could be in this patch of woods used by the Army for training exercises inside of post boundaries.

I crawled right up on top of the mound. Man, I was thinking, it is hot tonight. I'm sweating buckets. It feels like the ground I am lying on is warm, feels like a space heater.

Then the fire ants swarmed. It was like somebody threw a switch. They had air support. Winged ones erupted in a cloud around me. The ground forces bit me a thousand at a time and they were leaving their heads behind locked in the wound.

I just started this low painful growling, trying not to yell. I had to get up and run for the river. Everybody saw me. I was literally in there five minutes trying to drown them all but the welts and the bites were scary. They had bit me all over my entire body. I had to keep my head under because I had to drown the ones in my hair.

I stripped off about everything and got back into the water in the coldest deepest part and just sat there until I was sure I got them all. I waded out in my briefs carrying my helmet liner full of water and was pouring it over my head to try to wash them out.

I was limping from the muscles in my leg being so sore and swollen and I had to take it really slow.

I looked up when I was standing on the river bank and there the NCO from the chow line was standing. He stared at me for a long time.

"I gotcha ass you goddamn communist. All them fire ants are working for me, Private. I trained each and every one of them to bite a Marxist if they smelled one nearby. You lucky I blew the whistle to call'em off."

I had a really strong desire to write this story down tonight. It happened a long, long time ago. One of those moments lost in the rain, as the replicant said to Deckard right before he died.

The Utterly Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse

There is already too much unconsciousness in the world. Into such a sleep what dreams may come? What horrors rush in to fill the shadows we are seeing that used to be the in-dwelling places of the soul? Nature abhors a vacuum and most of the population is nearly there now.

As sure as death and taxes, one way or another we will have the zombie apocalypse. The flavour like Baskin Robbins is no matter. We may have it from hunger. We may have it from disease. Or we might just have it because once you strip enough humanity away from humans they aren't human any longer. I agree with the author. It is written in the stars that this will happen. Where will you be when it happens? On the road like the sheriff and his merry band living from hand to mouth? Or 12 feet underground playing parcheesi in a properly constructed and livable, hospitable long term vault? A day is coming when the question will no longer be theoretical.

Manjaro Linux

I normally would not promote one version of Linux over another because there are so many varieties but after trying this distribution I gotta tell ya it is smooth ... fast ... quick loading ... and a darn good replacement for Windows 7 or XP if you're resisting the Orwellian Windows 10 Borg autobots popping up their intimidating windows on your machine despite never approving that kind of advertisement taking over your PC with your last Microsoft "Update." (Virus Installer)

Try the SSD installation procedure if you want to see an 8 second boot with another partition on the same card. I tried to scratch my nose before the screen appeared but it brought up the desktop before I could finish.

THE ITZ DIET! Finally a diet that really works! ITZ COMING!

It leverages time tested principles to guarantee you shed those excess pounds - FAST!

Proven solution to unwanted weight gain tested in third world countries and demonstrated to help you lose that flab at an unprecedented rate!

"I've tried all the popular diets and none of them really worked for me!
This one will keep that weight off after you have lost it - guaranteed!"
This is the life-changing diet that Amerikwans have been waiting for!
P.S. Every single famine in history during the last 500 years has been deliberately engineered by governments. Without governments, the human race was capable of providing ample amounts of cheap, healthy, plentiful natural food over a half a millennium ago based purely on advances in agriculture and animal husbandry without any resort to GMOs, pesticides or large scale corporate farming. The reason there are famines coming is because (as always) the government has seen to it. For example, if they taught you about the "Irish Potato Famine," did they explain to you why the Irish only had potatoes left as a crop? Did they explain what state the Irish people were in right before the "famine" happened? No, chances are they didn't teach you these things. There is a reason they didn't teach you these things. When things get bad, the government will make sure you won't be able to learn about this and many other things.

Australia Builds Naval Ships For U.S. Military That Are Not Optimised For Water Operation

Give us a couple billion more and we will fix that thingamajig, say Aussies.

Normally R&D testing brings out bugs like this in ships before they are mass produced.

"R&D Whatchamasay now?" - Australian

Testing is extra. You Yanks said you wanted boats. Nobody said anything about them being seaworthy. That's just like a Yank to try to sneak in extra features without paying for them.

I took her out fer a spin meself before delivery, yah stupid Yanks. She wez perfectly fine I donnow whatcha talking' bout. Yer bein' too ruff wittit. That bow was fine before she left and you started hittin' a bunch of waves wittit. You dun broke it yah stoopid Yank.

P.S. Notice it's an Australia company which doesn't build these ships in Australia, despite an abundant supply of idle shipyards and men hungry for work. Instead they build them in Alabama providing jobs and helping the economy there. Australia they put on their stationary but they don't actually employ anybody in a 3000 mile wide nation with prolific infrastructure rusting away designed for exactly this kind of manufacturing.

Deconstructing The Military and the Martial Virtues

When Bolshevists seize power

The Romans found out they were living in a complete fantasy world when they went into the Teutoberger forest. Eyewitness accounts say the Teutonics piled their bodies six stories high and left them to rot for the buzzards.

I correspond with some old military buddies now and then. There is not a doubt in my mind that in the first conflict with a real enemy the U.S. is going to get absolutely creamed. I see radioactive wastes a hundred miles wide with the bodies of soldiers in Europe and elsewhere six stories deep this time around. The next war will come as much a shock as the last one was to those who have failed to innovate or improve their strategic outlook.

When feminists, butch girls and metrosexual soldiers encounter Spetznatz and Red Chinese assault troops they are going to discover that playing Call of Duty had not prepared them to fight a real war in the least. Not the tiniest bit. I think of the French on horseback with feathered hats riding into the German machine gun trench gauntlets while bored Huns turned them into hamburger by just squeezing a trigger. This went on for days before French officers suspected anything might be amiss in their battle strategy. Kwanstainia talks a good game and certainly had the original lead in tech but I think all of that has changed now. My ancestors made it look so easy to stay on top they just took it for granted that it would just stay that way. They make scienmagistical sounds and squint but when they open their eyes nothing good has made itself and they are still gearing up to fight World War Two. Unfortunately this is World War Three.

Yellowstone - The "Nuke" Extinction Event That Leaves The Planet A Crater

It is long overdue to blow and is getting more active by the hour.

The Russians were threatening to open the caldera with specially targeted nuclear strikes.

If you think about what has been happening in the real world the past 15 years or so, it is more bizarre than Stanley Kubrick's DR. STRANGELOVE. The funny thing is ... we were talking about that world before it happened. In fact, the wheels were already in motion when the first edition of TEXAS ARCANE'S SURVIVAL REPORT went up on the web back in 1998. We breathed out the ideas and the next thing you know, they were on the front page of the newspaper ... leaving poor Tex feeling like George Orr in Ursula K. Leguin's THE LATHE OF HEAVEN. We slept, we dreamed ... in the morning when we awoke the world was like this. It is no wonder the Neanderthals were a dream culture focused on the internal world as much as the external, given to reverie and long deep contemplation of images by torchlight. They knew that the work of the subconscious always precedes the conscious realization of new information. Once appreciated it can save many lives where rational thought is much inadequate. Visions and portents mean something because the mind is using them to try to focus your attention on things your conscious mind is missing.

General Jack Ripper was a man far ahead of his time who foresaw the
world that was coming and the evil that was at work and decided
to take action against it when the initiative was his.

Weapon Systems of the Third World War

Doomsday delivered under the sea.

I've been wondering for months if all the saltwater displaced by the explosion of one of these warheads might lead to radioactive rains that annihilate anybody aboveground and this article seems to confirm it. This is a serious 1965 Sunday Supplement style future weapon to be certain. America has forced innovation in this field with their actions worldwide and the Russians appear to be getting really serious about the Klausewitzian nature of nuclear war. It's no-holds-barred, winner-takes-all. The Kwanstainians don't know it now but their own government isn't even on the field yet with a strategy of their own. The plans they do have are all about survival of the government, not the population. That means they have already ceded this conflict to the enemy. If you cannot protect your population you have forfeited the war in advance by default.

Catch that bit about the "cobalt shell?" Nobody likes an I-told-you-so but Vault-Co has been talking about cobalt salts for 15 years. They tell the public a bunch of fairy tales about cobalt not being effectively dispersed and thus posing no threat. To listen to Americans, you wouldn't think there is any aspect of all-out nuclear war that needs to be worried about. This is preamble to an extinction.

In the late 80's I read about possible experiments in the desert with small cobalt payloads. The results were so terrifying that apparently people working on the project killed themselves from sheer despair. This ain't no suitcase shelter in the basement we are talking about with a two week stay. An atomic war with cobalt really separates the men from the boys in surviving armageddon. If you have two feet of dirt for overhead cover or six inches of sandbags you could be in trouble with 100,000 rads an hour topside for months. You need a real vault for these events.

New Landspeed Record Set For Corporate Wrecking

Apple scaling back production of IPhones

Please, CEO of Apple, tell us some more about your gay marriage. That is so relevant to the billion dollar industry you were managing, we all need to know more about that.

Nothing worse than leftist parasites taking victory laps for other people's work. This guy was so sure of himself given Apple's profitability at the time he thought nothing he did could spoil the dream. Not as easy as Steven Jobs made it look, is it? The dude must have been taking counsel with Steve Ballmer. Ruined Apple in a matter of weeks.

I love my Mac. Wouldn't trade it for anything out there. Terrible to see technology so critical to the advancement of the industry falling into the hands of such nincompoops.
