The best geologists in the world are saying it's a matter of time until enough water pours into the cavity left by the oil coming out to trigger the methane bomb underneath the shelf of the Gulf. Once the pressure equalizes, there's definitely going to be a methane explosion. Some say it will be local, others believe it could literally destroy the right half of the continent of North America in ten minutes.
"Cavitation" in much smaller instances has resulted in explosions of incredible ferocity. Judging by the oil pressure of what is pouring out, you could see the equivalent of a 50 megaton Doomsday bomb detonated at the lower corner of the United States. The resulting tsunami would scrape that portion of the country clean back to North Carolina just like a broom removing all traces of human habitation.
Of course, any kind of explosion is just going to disseminate the toxins already in the water now just that much farther into the mainland.
Any way that this ends, a lot of people in the Kwanstain are getting ready to die.
UPDATE : Oil is radioactive, signifying large stores of methane in this deposit.
UPDATE : Mainstream confirmation ... this thing is now outside of the control of anyone on Earth outside of Superman and God. I don't work on Sundays, so it's up to God from here on in.
Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.
- Jer. 23:19
God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers.
- Na. 1:2-4
